My four year old tom cat has suddenly become very aggressive?

I don't know exactly why but he's started hissing at our three year old cat and attacking both my wife and I. He used to be a very pive individual but now he's more like a "Jekyll and Hyde". One minute he's fine and the next it's a case of stand well back and leave him alone. Can anyone out there offer any suggestions?
