Please help on burning films? i need to no the format?

i download films all the time they come in different formats all time but i use avs video converter but what i need to no is what format shall i use to convert the files so i can play them on dvd players. please please help is it dvd. mpeg or what and what do i burn them as a dvd or vcd please help some one must no
