What is offender restitution?
It is when the State attorneys office forces the defendant to pay the victim for damages. For example, if the police arrest a man for damaging a mailbox in front of the victims property, the state attorney can, as part of the plea or sentence, can require the defendant by law to repay the victim for his losses. In the example I just gave, the expenses would be the price of a new mailbox to replace the one damaged by the defendant. Restitution is common in traffic crashes as well. Some police departments also request restitution from the defendant in drunk driving cases in the amount of how much the officer made on overtime in court. A city can request restitution if their property is damaged by a defendant as well, such as road signs run over during a pursuit. Hope this helps!
