My nephew is being treated for MRSA (a boil) and is on antibiotics, can my kids go swimming/hottub w/ him?
NO! Do not get in the water with him!! This is a HIGHLY contagious disease. Until his physician has cleared him and the infection is COMPLETELY gone, do not take that risk. MRSA can kill a small child. Please consult with your physician. MRSA can often give the appearance of "getting better" with antibiotics...however it may not completely clear the staph infection and another antibiotic may have to be used. Contact should not be an issue, if your physician says that it is okay. But proper handwashing is pertinent for everyone's safety. I have worked in nursing facilities for years where this infection is rampant. It is VERY hard to clear up and can cause multiple problems in relation. Often in the elderly and sometimes children, the infection is recurring, even when it appears that it is "gone". Good luck! Hope he gets better very soon!
